In the final analysis, the product a rating agency "sells" is its credibility with a broad client base of investors who rely on its credit opinions. Maintaining investor confidence in the objectivity of ratings is therefore critical.
Rating agency decisions that directly affect an issuer’s reputation or borrowing costs may sometimes be received less enthusiastically by the issuer. In order to add value in the market, the rating agency should be prepared to uphold integrity when giving risk opinions. Interested parties such as, intermediaries, governments, and even current holders of that issuer’s securities must not influence their opinion.
An agency's value in the marketplace is derived from its credibility with investors. And it is precisely that investor confidence which enables borrowers to maintain access to the capital markets over time.
L&G analysts will look at each issuer's business in its entirety, namely financial and operational statistics. They will also make extensive use of computer modeling techniques.
An analysis of the fundamental credit strengths and weaknesses unique to each entity and management team will also be made. This will enable the analyst to understand the long-term risks specific to each borrower's industry.
To keep the markets informed, L&G analysts will maintain a continuous dialogue with investors. They will spend time interacting with issuers and intermediaries, get their viewpoints, offer opinions on the risk implications of planned debt offerings, and maintain open, candid dialogue about the rationale underpinning their rating judgments.
In times of market stress, hat deeper understanding of each issuer's risk profile can help to alleviate investor concerns, thereby helping the issuer affected to maintain market access.
We undertake to maintain absolute independence and adherence to internationally accepted standards.
